You have to stand close to see the story within the painting… you can see that the child’s face is thumbnail size! And getting in close also draws your attention to the textures and colours of the original artist’s work.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOriginal vintage painted by an unknown artist collected locally. This little piece has a lot of nice texture, which I worked around with the floating Sorgan frogs. The canvas itself was loose and saggy in one area, probably where it had been leaned against… but I repaired it with an old artist trick (spritzing the back with water so the canvas shrinks to fit the frame.) I really liked how the artist had looked at the landscape and was true to what she saw. The branches on the trees aren’t uniform, you can tell she was wanting to capture that particular view in that moment. It was a fun story based on the idea that the transporter was malfunctioning and beaming up two versions of the same being… you guessed it, one good and one evil! Made for some dramatic acting from Captain Kirk! And the dog dressed in this costume with the massive horn and antennae was just wonderfully ridiculous…\u003cimg\u003e he looked totally not impressed!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vintage painting I used for this artwork was in rough shape when it came to me… I’m sure someone loved their pekingese very much to have his portrait painted years ago, but it looked a bit scary with it’s glazed over eyes! The painting itself was covered with grime, and so I cleaned it and was able to get the blue skies and grey stone colours back. The art was in good condition, had just fallen into the “out of vogue” category of thrifted art. So this alteration plays with the idea that they perhaps flew a little too low over our northern Canadian landscape sometime in the late 1800’s, and that moment was captured by the original artist.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have held onto this painting for some time, considering whether to alter it or not. I don’t usually alter such old pieces, but in the end I decided I would enjoy it more with something fun added to it. I kept the colour of the alterations subtle, working with the original artists palette… and added in some age spots to blend it in with the existing ones on artwork.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI collected this from a local antique collector. Dated 1875, the artwork is unsigned. On the back of the painting it reads “Academy Board, Extra Quality. Manufactured Expressly for the Art Metropole. Toronto. Ontario. Canada.” The building is still there, but the original company is out of business. There is some faint handwriting in pencil on the back but it is only seen in partial light and is in difficult-to-read cursive writing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRestoration : I cleaned this piece, removing a layer of brown grime. Most famously Nichelle Nichols rocked this uniform as the groundbreaking Lt. Uhura. (I think it’s also a fun parallel that Princess Bonaparte trades up a revealing top for a revealing miniskirt uniform!)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was a vintage postcard print of the original painting 'The Beautiful Greek'', a portrait of Princess Marie Pauline Bonaparte, by Salomon-Guillaume Counis (Swiss, 1785-1859.) The original of these paintings are now in my personal collection, as I'm rather fond of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrints of Victorian era portraits were very common. Looking at history, it's interesting to remember that without cameras, drawings and painted portraits were the only way of capturing one's image. It was common to have portraits painted of family members to document their life. Painted portraits were quite expensive... which would have influenced the trend of miniature portraits, which were more affordable due to their size and materials. (Although, I'll testify as an artist that while smaller means less paint, it doesn't mean less time... and it is extremely difficult to paint tiny!) \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo with that in mind, I enjoyed creating these portraits of Data \u0026amp; Spot in this older portrait style. As an android incapable of human emotion, Data's past times all revolved around activities that are uniquely human to help him better understand and perhaps become more human... including painting and owning a pet cat! Even though Data did not feel emotions, he had a familiarity of the pathways to his brain regarding Spot that were clearly indicative of care and love.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eData's exploration of painting was also fascinating to watch... he explored the art of painting to unlock his own creativity, another human concept that logically was out of Data's reach. In one episode, he was obsessively painting his first ever dream... even painting with both hands two paintings at once! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn painting these portraits, I liked imagining that Data himself painted these portraits... perhaps he broke the prime directive and was stuck in time in the Victorian Era. I’ve ended up collecting a few of their pieces, and it’s fun seeing the same composition painted in each of their styles… they must have enjoyed painting altogether! This vintage piece has some colour fading and wear, and after thorough cleaning I was unable to restore to the original blues. So I have worked with it and see that faded colour as part of its charm.
