They were very, very dirty! No hanging wire, bit dented. So I gently cleaned them and put them in new, modern frames. These are replica paintings, created to emulate the style of old European masters. So I added in elements made of LEGO (seagull, helm, bumpers on side of boat, and a weathered fisherman catching a big fish) into this painting to celebrate my favourite childhood toy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this vintage painting by Howard at a local thrift store. It was a cute little painting, but an example of a style that has fallen a bit in the grandpa art category… and I think it’s a shame, because they are very well done! There was also a fine rip developing, so I patched that. The frame had been painting a cream colour, so I gave it a coat of matte white paint to freshen it up a bit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original vintage painting by E. Harris was collected from @theemporiumbuyandsell in Burk’s Falls, Ontario. The original artist, Edwin Harris, was born in England and emigrated to Canada about 1906. Harris lived in Toronto till he passed about 1980. He was a hobby artist and copied other paintings. He was quite prolific, painting ships, cavaliers, flower still life, birds. After all, octopus are curious, intelligent creatures. They have control over every suction cup on every tentacle,\u003cspan\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eeach with the ability to touch, taste and smell. I’m not sure the sailors on board the ship would appreciate that bit of trivia while their ship is being tossed around… but I find it fascinating!\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis vintage ship painting by D. Mount was originally purchased from The Art House in Toronto. I collected this painting from its original owner in the Simcoe area. The painting is in good condition, with minor fine cracking across the surface. The frame has been finely splattered with dark paint, but I think it adds character. The artist did a fantastic job of replicating this ship painting… though they forgot one mast, I had to add that in between the sails! This is a really pretty little painting just as is, with no damage to the art or frame. This little piece has a lot of nice texture, which I worked around with the floating Sorgan frogs. The canvas itself was loose and saggy in one area, probably where it had been leaned against… but I repaired it with an old artist trick (spritzing the back with water so the canvas shrinks to fit the frame.) And the dog dressed in this costume with the massive horn and antennae was just wonderfully ridiculous…\u003cimg\u003e he looked totally not impressed!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vintage painting I used for this artwork was in rough shape when it came to me… I’m sure someone loved their pekingese very much to have his portrait painted years ago, but it looked a bit scary with it’s glazed over eyes! The painting itself was covered with grime, and so I cleaned it and was able to get the blue skies and grey stone colours back. Finally one woman explained the statue’s not-so-subtle meaning as an invitation for jamaharon… and Captain Picard, the classy guy he was, admitted he didn’t even know what jamaharon was. So this alteration plays with the idea that they perhaps flew a little too low over our northern Canadian landscape sometime in the late 1800’s, and that moment was captured by the original artist.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have held onto this painting for some time, considering whether to alter it or not. I don’t usually alter such old pieces, but in the end I decided I would enjoy it more with something fun added to it. I kept the colour of the alterations subtle, working with the original artists palette… and added in some age spots to blend it in with the existing ones on artwork.\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI collected this from a local antique collector. Dated 1875, the artwork is unsigned. On the back of the painting it reads “Academy Board, Extra Quality. Manufactured Expressly for the Art Metropole. Toronto. Ontario. Canada.” The building is still there, but the original company is out of business. There is some faint handwriting in pencil on the back but it is only seen in partial light and is in difficult-to-read cursive writing.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRestoration : I cleaned this piece, removing a layer of brown grime. Most famously Nichelle Nichols rocked this uniform as the groundbreaking Lt. Uhura. Looking at history, it's interesting to remember that without cameras, drawings and painted portraits were the only way of capturing one's image. It was common to have portraits painted of family members to document their life. Painted portraits were quite expensive... which would have influenced the trend of miniature portraits, which were more affordable due to their size and materials. (Although, I'll testify as an artist that while smaller means less paint, it doesn't mean less time... and it is extremely difficult to paint tiny!) \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo with that in mind, I enjoyed creating these portraits of Data \u0026amp; Spot in this older portrait style. As an android incapable of human emotion, Data's past times all revolved around activities that are uniquely human to help him better understand and perhaps become more human... including painting and owning a pet cat! Even though Data did not feel emotions, he had a familiarity of the pathways to his brain regarding Spot that were clearly indicative of care and love.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eData's exploration of painting was also fascinating to watch... he explored the art of painting to unlock his own creativity, another human concept that logically was out of Data's reach. In one episode, he was obsessively painting his first ever dream... even painting with both hands two paintings at once! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn painting these portraits, I liked imagining that Data himself painted these portraits... perhaps he broke the prime directive and was stuck in time in the Victorian Era.
