May the 4th Be With You - 2025
Share

This May the 4th, I had fun visiting Dagobah, getting to know some unique droids, and visiting the crash sites of some armoured vehicles that met their demise. These altered paintings and drawings play with the idea that these things really did happen a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
I've shared more details for each paintings below... you can find the originals and reproductions on my May the 4th Be With You page.

"There Is No Try" Original, Prints & Digital | Watch it be painted here "Do or do not. There is no try." —Yoda I literally had this going through my head the entire time I was painting this… because it was very difficult to get the angles right! Sometimes paintings come together quickly, and sometimes I have to scrub it off and start over… and over… and over again! But I persisted, which I think is Yoda’s main lesson to Luke… to commit to something with your whole self, not to go into it already defeated thinking “I’ll try but I don’t think I can do it.” I’m pleased with where it ended up and glad I persisted! The original vintage oil painting was collected locally in Ontario. This vintage painting was such an other worldly colour, I right away thought of Dagobah… on a very sunny day, lol! I rescued it locally, gave it a good clean, and painted in a bit of fun in the original artist’s style so it blends in subtly. I like that the ship is just there, almost waiting to be lifted out of the muck… a lesson waiting to be learned! |

"My Home This Is" Original, Prints & Digital | Watch it be painted here "Soon will I rest, yes, forever sleep. Earned it I have. Twilight is upon me, soon night must fall." — Yoda But I loved that Yoda made a home during his self exile to Dagobah, and what a cozy home it was. No smoke comes from the chimney in this painting, Yoda must be out looking for something tasty to cook for dinner. I wonder what happened to his hut after his body transformed and joined the Force. This vintage painting was rescued locally in Ontario before being given a second life & new story. |

"Tripped" Original, Prints & Digital | Watch it be painted here "That armor's too strong for blasters. Rogue group, use your harpoons and tow cables. Go for the legs; it might be our only chance of stopping them." —Luke Skywalker, Battle of Hoth One of my favourite Star Wars moments was when they took down the walker by first roping its legs with cables causing it to crumple face first like a wrangled bull into the snow! The AT-AT’s (All Terrain Armoured Transports) were sooo intimidating, and it was “so Star Wars” to have such a simple way to take them down! With this old print by Robert Wood, I have wanted to “crash” something into the rocks, and have sat on different ideas for several months. The shape of that first rock is what determined it for me, as it reminded me of the head of a walker. So I built the idea of my painting around that iconic, helpless felled walker from the original films. |

"Tiny Troopers" Original, Prints & Digital | Watch it be painted here Out for patrol, these tiny troopers are so small they are the size of my thumbprint! This tiny painting of a village looked absolutely deserted, and I wondered why… until my son said “Storm troopers.” When the Empire rose to power, it slowly and methodically took control of star systems. Control would start gradually, the Empire welcomed with open arms because the danger wasn’t recognized until it was too late. Then, if there was resistance, villages like this one would see an increased show of military strength… curfews implemented, any signs of rebellion stamped out. The once vibrant streets deserted, and the scared villagers could only look on hide behind closed doors. So this alteration is tiny, but it captures that desperate feeling of being controlled that later lead to rebellion and freedom for the entire galaxy. The original vintage oil painting was collected locally in Brampton, Ontario. The original was in a rough style, on paper and very little, which is a recipe for an unforgiving process. So I practiced a lot before I started so that I could more confidently and gently paint this in one go. |

Portraits of Droids - Collect originals here! I was delighted to have so many droids willing to sit for their portraits... these were done in acrylic paint and pencil on black paper. I like to frame the droids in old timey portrait frames like they are family members! |
I had to tear myself away from painting droids, and could have easily kept going creating more and more pieces to celebrate May the 4th! But I know from experience that stopping to work on something completely different (like painting cute fairytale creatures!) is best for creativity. And when I return to paint more ideas inspired by galaxies far away, they will be even better for it.
May the 4th be with you,
Heather
