My collection “Alice’s Flowers” is inspired by the snobby flower garden in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland! After being called a "weed," Alice threatened that if she was her right size, she could come back and pick every last one of them… perhaps she did!
The original was collected locally in Ontario, from an art dealer who imported thousands of mass produced paintings in the 80's and 90's. This particular one was rolled up, so I restretched it on a wood frame before altering it. I gave some of the flowers a colour boost, then had fun painting little faces in all the flowers.
The style of these mid-century florals was very popular to the point that it began to be mass produced. Once an idea is mass produced, it loses its uniqueness and value… which is why paintings like these, which took time and effort to paint by hand, are being discarded. I really enjoy adding something fun to these vintage florals to make them unique again, and give them another chance to be appreciated.
