“I Can See Them, Too”

altered art by Heather Castles
61 x 91.5 cm (2 x 3 ft) print on board
76 x 107 cm (30 x 42 inch) frame

One of my favourite scenes in “The Order of the Phoenix” was how JK Rowling introduced the thestrals. The moment when Luna Lovegood said to Harry that she could see the thestrals, too, would have been so reassuring to someone who could not believe what creepy monstrosities they were seeing. The way Luna was so gentle and accepting towards them helped change the way Harry saw these misunderstood creatures. So with this altered painting, I wanted to share her view of thestrals, and imagine them in a world where they are perceived as gentle beasts, who love a good run through the grass and to feel the wind through their wings.

This alteration is on a vintage print of the painting titled “Wild & Free Horses” by American artist Harland Young (1924 - 2015.)

Original print quality : This print was produced c1960, and over the years it has slowly lost its vibrant colour due to sun and environmental damage. I decided to keep the original faded colours as it worked well with the ethereal feel of the thestrals. I cleaned and touched up parts where I felt it was necessary, but left left some scuffs and stains on the print as part of the vintage look.

Frame : The original vintage frame is sturdy. Made of wood with some detailing on the inside trim. Some of the faux wood paneling has peeled off which I have left to add to the character and the feeling that the thestral painting was done a long time ago. (You can always peel off the wood panelling if you prefer the gold!)  It has been rewired and is ready to display on the wall. It is not heavy.

Altered Muggle Art : With this collection, I’m capturing magical moments from my non-magical “muggle” point of view. By taking vintage artworks and altering them to depict magical places and creatures, I am creating a historical fiction around the  idea that the world of wizards was real. With this particular piece of artwork I aim to celebrate and memorialize the character of Hagrid brought to life by the loveable Robbie Coltrane.

SHIPPING : This painting is too large to go by regular post so the only option for shipping in North America is via freight. I have found FedEx Freight to be the most affordable option. If you prefer another shipping service we can discuss this after purchase and adjust the shipping cost as required. If you are local you are welcome to pick up from my studio at no extra charge.
