"Filled With Comfort"
Altered art by Heather Castles

“Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.” —Tolkien

When this print came to me to alter, at first I wasn’t so sure about the bright, cheerful greens and flowers everywhere! It was so ideal and picturesque and comfortable, if you lived there you’d never want to leave. Then it made me think of Bag End and the Shire, and knew this is where I pictured it to be.

While painting this, I thought of Bilbo, who had grown a bit comfortable in his middle age… and how something sparked in him to leave it all behind to go on an adventure! (Although, Gandalf did have the sense to collect Bilbo’s hankies… there are certain comforts that are difficult for a hobbit to live without!)

As much as he loved adventure, Bilbo also missed home. It think that is captured in him picking up an acorn at Elrond’s, and carrying it in his pocket  the rest of the journey with the intent of planting it in his own garden… so that even at home he would always remember his adventure.

🖼️ The original vintage art was discarded locally… the print was sagging out of the frame and was dirty. I gave it a good clean, and affixed it to the masonite board with acid free glue. After completing the alteration, I double varnished the painting to seal it and protect the addition of the cozy home in the hill.
