Unless you read the LOTR books, is difficult to appreciate how much time spans on the adventure and how long it would take to journey from one part of Middle Earth to the other. Early in “The Fellowship of the Ring” film we see Gollum at Barad-dûr shrieking “Shire! Baggins!” ...but then, within an hour or so, we are introduced to Gollum in the Mines of Moria. But weeks and months had passed between those two scenes… and what was Gollum doing all that time as he searched for his precious? 

I imagined the terrain he would have crossed… and how the sunlight and fresh air would have felt so potent to him after decades deep in the pitch black of the mountain. I like to think that, in that time, there were moments where Sméagol could emerge and enjoy the simple things like the warmth of the sun, and the taste of a fresh fish from the mountain stream. 

So when I painted this alteration, I could hear Sméagol singing to himself as he enjoyed that moment… before the pull of the ring took hold of him, and he continued his journey as Gollum ever onwards towards the precious.
