I always loved the part of The Two Towers when the Ents marched on Isengard… the film’s a little different than Tolkien’s story, in the book the Ents did not need any convincing to fight for the trees and the forest. But it’s enjoyable and emotional to watch those scenes in the film… and that one Ent who caught on fire, eeeee!

So this alteration was a pleasure to paint, and I took several weeks to complete this original painting… saving Treebeard, Merry & Pippin for the very last, because I was so nervous I would mess up!

With five ents and Isengard tower, it has a lot of elements to it. I couldn’t resist adding into the painting the popular “To Isengard” meme of the twiggy walking tree into the painting! I love that he is so tiny yet is leading the way… much like the hobbits were eager to join in the battles to help their friends. (The oldest instance of this twiggy tree meme I’ve found was dated 2010, does anyone know who originally took the photo of the twiggy tree?)

"To Isengard"
upcycled vintage painting by Heather Castles

61 x 122 cm (2 x 4 ft) canvas
79 x 140 cm (31 x 55 inches) frame

The original vintage painting by L. Godfrey was collected from a thrift store. I gave it a thorough clean, touched up the frame, and secured the wire on the back for display.

Frame : The original frame is in very good condition. Wired and ready to display. I spent som time repainting the trim to freshen it up a bit.
