These paintings on paper study were to prepare for my new altered art featuring thestrals. I had a vintage picture book which was in "well loved" shape,  and the chapter heads were all of ponies running along the beach. I enjoyed experimenting with painting the different positions of the wings, the transparency, the skeletal figures. There were a few unique illustrations in the story that also suited being transformed, so I had fun with those as well. 

It was a happy accident that after painting 17 illustrations, I realized I had enough to make a little animation. (Had I known I would animate it, I would have adjusted the legs a bit too!) Check out my reels on social media, or drop me a note in the chat and I'll share it with you!

Original picture book details : 1953 edition of "Sea Star Orphan of Chincoteague" By Marguerite Henry, Illustrated by Wesley Dennis. Originally published in 1949.

You will receive 1 PDF file with 26 illustrations. This file will enable you to print high resolution prints. The size is overall paper dimensions including the white border. (The original paintings were 7 x 9.5 inches in case you want to print to scale!)

Please note that I did touch up the scans so they would print nicely... the artwork in person has more imperfections and you can see where the light coloured paint went on the paper... I have removed those digitally because they are more distracting in print than when they are seen in person in natural lighting. Hope you enjoy them!
