Anyone else have a Bastian haircut in the 80’s?
“The Neverending Story” was one of those classic movies from my 80’s childhood, full of adventure and fantasy and trauma! (Poor Artax!) (And yes, that is a tiny Vooshvazool with his diurnal bat flying towards the Ivory Tower)
With this alteration, the painting I was working with was heavy on pastel and grey tones, which gave it a very dated, eighties feel. Even the old frame had peach trim! But the quality of brushwork and detail in the trees was lovely, so I wanted whatever I added to be subtle to not fight with the pretty landscape. The grey sky lent itself well to silhouette the Ivory Tower… which as Bastian said, “…it’s even more beautiful than I thought!”
This is a good example of how paint can look different colours in different lights! Sometimes the sky looks grey, sometimes blue, sometimes a yellow!
The original painting on canvas was by P. Hittinon, c1950. His family were prolific painters in the mid-century, often painting the same scene side by side in their slightly similar styles.
