Print of : "Don't Blink"
altered painting by Heather Castles
The idea for this alteration came from a fellow Dr Who nerd... and I am so glad she suggested it!
This murky little painting had lots of paint spatters, foxing, paint chipping off, the colours were quite dull, brushwork wasn't strong... so I wasn't sure what to add that would help bring it back to life! It needed something strong that could stand on its own as an idea without needing the help of a "good" painting around it. (Please forgive me : I have a critical eye and am very judgy with art!)
A weeping angel on it's own can seem an innocuous element to add… unless you've seen the episodes of Doctor Who where you discover they are really quantum-locked humanoids, who move the moment they are not being watched, then with a touch send you back in time and feed off the energy of the possible lives you never lived. Then that little angel becomes ominously terrifying… and you try very hard to not blink!
The original vintage painting was rescued from a thrift store. I gave it a good clean, but you can still see foxing and tiny white paint spatters all over it… which I think is part of the character of the old art, and adds to the feel that this painting (and angel) came from long ago! The wood frame is sturdy and wired to display on the wall.
