Framed Print of : Sixty Portions
upcycled vintage painting by Heather Castles
What if Rey sold BB8 for the sixty portions she was offered? Life on Jakku is a struggle… except for the wealthy! I imagined this painting hanging in on the walls of a wealthy scrapper’s ship… boasting to the less fortunate, that not only do they have exotic foods and flowers imported from a neighboring planet, but a state-of-the-art droid to amuse them over brunch.
This sort of still life painting can seem a bit cliche nowadays. But at their peak, these 17th-century Dutch still life arrangements were full of hidden meanings intended to cause the viewer to reflect on life and consumerism. The art ranged from indulgent spreads displayed on finery which was a way of displaying ones wealth, to more humble paintings featuring simple, wholesome local produce to show one’s morality. A partially eaten piece of food or a broken glass served as a reminder of mortality and the fragility of life.
