"A Comfortable Neighbourhood"
Altered painting by Heather Castles
“I should like to save the Shire, if I could - though there have been times when I thought the inhabitants too stupid and dull for words, and have felt that an earthquake or an invasion of dragons might be good for them. But I don't feel like that now. I feel that as long as the Shire lies behind, safe and comfortable, I shall find wandering more bearable: I shall know that somewhere there is a firm foothold, even if my feet cannot stand there again.” — Frodo (Tolkien)
This sweet little countryside landscape just said “shire” to me. I loved picturing both Bilbo and Frodo living in the shire, enjoying its comforts… and yet both leaving it all behind to go on a dangerous adventure.
I admired Frodo in particular, who was far less interested in adventure than his uncle Bilbo! For Frodo, his willingness to leave his comfortable neighborhood behind came from recognizing the task that had fallen to him with bearing the one ring, and he had the integrity to see it through to the best of his ability.
This alteration was very tiny, and I was careful to use small brushstroke in the same style as the artist who painted the original vintage painting to blend in the addition of the homes in Bilbo and Frodo’s neighborhood.
The oak tree on top of Bag End was grown from an acorn Bilbo carried home with him on his journey to the Lonely Mountain with Thorin Oakenshield. It was meant to be a momento to help him remember his friends and all they did… but as it grew it became a grand monument to the start of something much bigger!
