These loose charcoal studies were made to prepare for my new altered painting inspired by Smaug the Magnificent. The lovely thing about working in charcoal on such an old tatty piece of paper, is that I feel more relaxed that it doesn’t have to be perfect… resulting in a loose, more carefree illustration.
